[00:00:00] CORY: Welcome to the impactors podcast. I'm Cory Carter
[00:00:04] RON: and I'm Ron. Cool.
[00:00:05] CORY: And we are the owners and founders of hindsight hacking media agency, podcast, funnels, graphics, and more head on over to get hhm.com
[00:00:15] RON: guys, we created this podcast to help you go create an impact today. Not tomorrow, not yesterday. Today. We're taking all the fluff, all the BS out, so you can go create an impact.
[00:00:32] CORY: And today's topic is
[00:00:33] RON: finding the right guest for your podcast.
[00:00:37] CORY: That's right, Ron, this, oh, man. I don't think we have enough time to talk about this today on this not only 10 minutes, like, come on. Yeah, not a 10 minute episode, but we're going to give you a little sneak peek into finding the right guests. And you know, maybe, maybe someday, maybe one time we'll do this like week long topic, about finding a guests because. It is so important. [00:01:00] And so I want to start this off with first, some podcasts out there never have guests good or bad idea. Go
[00:01:07] RON: bad bad idea
[00:01:09] CORY: why
[00:01:10] RON: at the end of the day. You want your podcasts yes. It's your voice. Okay. There's two things having a guest, the right guests. There's three things, but we're going to focus on two. Um, there's if they're a bigger fish than you, it helps you plug into their audience and gets new listenership towards you. Okay. So that's one way, secondly, what if they're a potential client that you can work with, right. But more importantly, your podcast is a show. It has to have some kind of entertainment value for your listeners. If it's just you. only Yes, you build credibility, but you don't exude the credibility with other people. So on the flip side, if it's only guests and no solos, you were not like owning any of [00:02:00] your subject matter expert ness. That's a word I just made up all one word, cause grammar be hard oh, you have to own all of those. So then you can be the subject matter expert of your own show, but you want to be surrounded by other subject matter experts. So your people know to come to you while you're being introduced to new people.
[00:02:24] CORY: Yeah. Yeah. So finding how does one, so that's, that's perfect. That's what I want to talk about, right? Like, you've got to have a mix unless you are a giant name, like Tony Robbins or, or I dunno, Oprah Winfrey. I think she still has guests, but you know, like, unless you're one of those big names, you kind of need to have some guests to build that brand. And so that's the starting point, but then back to the question of what this episode's about, how to find the right guests, finding the right guests for your show, like, what do you think. Is kind of step one. And I'm going to see, without us talking about this, I'm going to see if your step one is the same as [00:03:00] my step one, finding, finding the right guests here. Are we in sync today or not? Let's check.
[00:03:06] RON: I don't know I'm scared. Okay. Repeat the question. Cause now I feel pressure. What is, in your opinion, the first step we all need to understand. And before we find the right guests are finding in finding the right. I don't think we're on. I don't know if we're going to be on the same page on this one, but this is interesting energy and vibe for me. Like really, they've got to have the right energy to be on the show and it's gotta make sense why they're on the show, you know? Cause there's certain people I would love to have on the show, make zero sense why they would be on that. Right.
[00:03:39] CORY: Yeah. I mean, for us and this show, we don't actually have other guests it's just us for now, but our other podcasts, hindsight hacking, if they're an entrepreneur, they could potentially be on the show. Right,
[00:03:51] RON: right.
[00:03:52] CORY: But if it doesn't make sense, if you're just a stay at home, mom, that does it. Actually have a side business or any kind buisness of right, or [00:04:00] just an employee of a business. And, uh, you know, so it's, that's one piece, you know, and where I was going with, it was more like the what's the pre-work I need to do before I ever even look for a guest
[00:04:11] RON: I knew you were going to do that. So, so this is like people listening, like you got to understand, like, this is Corey and I, how we work together. Right. He will instantly go, here's the detailed stuff that we need to do. And I'm like, Hey, here's a squirrel. Let's go. Right. So this is a perfect example,
[00:04:27] CORY: but, but a couple of, a couple of the things that one needs to understand before they go looking for the guest is they, they need to understand kind of who is their ideal, like offer what's their offer. Who's their ideal client. Who's their ideal audience, you know? And because I think so many podcasts out there, they have an issue where they don't understand that part. And then the guests don't always make sense.
[00:04:53] RON: Yeah.
[00:04:53] CORY: Right. And I think once you understand your offer, once you understand your [00:05:00] kind of overall theme of what talking to and why you're talking to them, then it makes it easy to go find others in this space that have a message that would resonate with them that listenership. Right?
[00:05:11] RON: Sure. Sure.
[00:05:12] CORY: All right. So now once you understand your offer, you understand your audience, you know who you need to get. I guess you, you understand how do you know who to get now? Right? Like, let's go there. If you were to go. You, you know what you're serving, you know what you're offering or to our clients now what's the next step. Right? They understand everything now what's the next step? What do they need to go do to find, right guests.
[00:05:32] RON: They have to look for them, right? Nine times out of 10 that I can just fall in your lap. Right? You have to put things out there. You have to go search them out and you have to ask.
[00:05:43] CORY: Yeah, that was where I was going. Like the simplest answer. What's the simplest answer tothis question
[00:05:48] RON: You have to ask people to be on your show, right.
[00:05:50] CORY: people ask right. You understand who you're offering and who your listeners are. And then you go ask people that resonate, like, just ask
[00:05:56] RON: and watch this, watch this, watch this. We will want, we will [00:06:00] have, this is a premonition. Okay. So whatever episode, this is just mark it down that I said this. Okay. We have two shows, right? We have this show and we have Hindsight Hacking
[00:06:11] yeah.
[00:06:11] We do. solos on hindsight hacking. We have guests on hindsight hacking we don't have guests on the impactors it'sjust us talking? Right. Just kind of blobbing. We will have more people wanting to be on this show than we ever had for hindsight hacking for the simple fact is we don't have guests on this show.
[00:06:28] CORY: Yeah.
[00:06:29] RON: Because it's now something that they can can't have.
[00:06:34] CORY: Right. It's
[00:06:34] RON: right. It's exclusive. They can't have it. So they want it. So just mark my words write it down
[00:06:41] CORY: yeah. I mean, I think it's just important that we, again, even for our other show, we had someone this week or last week reach out saying they, they want to be on it because they
[00:06:51] RON: Like three months out,
[00:06:52] CORY: they've seen it, like it's they want to be on our show because they've seen who we're talking to. They know their messages would be right for audience, our [00:07:00] audience. Right. But it wasn't like that at first.
[00:07:02] RON: No,
[00:07:02] CORY: we just had to go ask, so find the right guests.
[00:07:08] RON: you're talking about somebody else. I'm talking about the person that said, Hey, I tried to be on your side. But you guys are three months out. Is that an error or is that accurate? I said it's accurate.
[00:07:17] CORY: Yeah.
[00:07:17] RON: She's like, okay. Three months out.
[00:07:21] CORY: Yeah. Yeah. That's I mean, it's just, but when you're starting out and you're having trouble, right? Like we've, we've had some of our clients that have had some of that issue and it starts with just go ask, right? Like you understand what you're offering. You've got to go ask and then what's the last piece. What's the last piece that I really there's. Two more things I wanted to kind of address today for this topic. Say they've went and asked and now they're at the point of either scheduling live or scheduling a zoom or whatever. So scheduling time to record. What's kind of that next phase of finding the right guests.
[00:07:57] RON: you have to make sure that you've allocated the time [00:08:00] appropriately in my mind to make sure you're giving the guests, the undivided, attention. And then after the guest is on your show, it's about edification of that guest. So, you know, I think you have to do your homework to know how you're going to. Introduced to this person, because you want to give them credibility because they're on your show. Right. And you want them to also share your show. So the best way for you to get them to do that is pumping that guest up. And so we use, we use a program where it's super easy when they book we ask very specific questions that gives us all the answers. We need to introduce them and Edify them in any assets that we use after.
[00:08:41] CORY: Yeah. But I mean, I think people get lost in that, right? Like find a way to get to know them a little bit beforehand, ask them the questions and, and a perfect example of this is on our other show. We, like, I personally invited somebody to our, to be a guest that individual on paper. [00:09:00] And even in messenger type chats was incredible. Always they're very active and had as an entrepreneur fit with our audience, with the things that person was offering. But then at the end of the day, that was a struggle as a guest for the guests. Right? So he is the right listener. He is the right message for the audience, but he didn't have the entertainment factor. Right. How does one address? Something like that? kay we had the right guests. Oh, with everything,
[00:09:35] RON: right?
[00:09:35] CORY: Until The entertainment side. How does a podcast host address that?
[00:09:40] RON: I think they have to be willing to not be as important as the person that's on your show. All of our imagery. Really all about the guest. Like we Edify them in every aspect of what everything, you know, so we pull out cool quotes from them. We pull out cool video clips from them. We even got our new [00:10:00] imagery. I wanted to make it feel like they were the star of a movie in the imagery. right I'm not sure if that's exactly what you're looking for, but it's kind of where my mind went.
[00:10:10] CORY: So again, thinking about our, recent guests, that we had individual, like you didn't know him from, from anyone and you were ready to like shut down the interview five minutes into it. So like, I think the answer I'm looking for is where does that as a podcast host, you need to have the courage to just say, Nope, that's it. It's not a good, not the right fit.
[00:10:31] RON: Right,
[00:10:32] CORY: right. And so like, we have this interview now in the camp. Right again on paper. This was the perfect guest
[00:10:39] RON: I didn't know you wanted me to go there because my mind went there. My mind went there because yeah, you have to have the courage to say, you might have the recording. It doesn't mean it has to ever go out.
[00:10:49] CORY: Doesn't mean ever has to go. Exactly. That's where I was going with that.
[00:10:52] RON: You protect your show. You protect the integrity of your show. If it did not represent your show, [00:11:00] how you wanted it to represent your show, guess who show it is. It's your show.
[00:11:04] CORY: Yeah. And so. If every a podcast host is on is ahead of the game, right? Like if they're not recording today for tomorrow, publish, if they are on schedule with everything, if they actually have it all lined up and have the who's helping them, then if you have a bad interview, like you don't have to publish it. Right.
[00:11:25] RON: Truth.
[00:11:26] CORY: So
[00:11:27] RON: true.
[00:11:27] CORY: So do all this. Finding the right guests, right? Like, know your offer, know your listener, find it the right information about that guest. So that way you can Edify them. Because again, the right guests will promote you. Right? The right guests is going to be entertainment for your audience in the right way. And they will promote you if you Edify them. Right. Full long thing, but finding the right guests, make sure they all resonate, make sure they're entertaining to the level that your show is, you know, and then Edify them. So that way they promote you and [00:12:00] some guests aren't going to promote, but I know we have one of our favorite guests, all about LinkedIn and for six months promoted our show because. She had the cool imagery that she liked and the cool quotes and videos that had her face and name on it that she was given. And so on that back end, it was promoting her and it was promoting the show all the time. So that is like your picture perfect guest.
[00:12:22] RON: Win-win
[00:12:24] CORY: all right, guys, that's all on this topic again. This is another one. I think we can just talk about for a long time if we wanted to. So, uh, but until next time enjoyed, I hope you all enjoyed the podcast and segment of, of, uh, of the impact.
